Report on Coursework in National Zoo – Department of SOA

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology of Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology (SMUCT) organized coursework under the Physical Anthropology (SOA-3105) module on Saturday, December 11, 2021, in Bangladesh National Zoo, Mirpur, Dhaka. The primary aims of the coursework were to gain first-hand and practical knowledge on living primates and learn about human-animal interactions.

Dr. A K M Mazharul Islam, a renowned Professor of Anthropology, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, and Executive Director, Institute of Applied Anthropology, was present as the chief guest. All faculty members and around 40 students were present in the coursework.

Professor Mazharul Islam conducted the coursework and taught our students how to observe the interaction between humans and animals. Dividing the students into two, he also guided them in preparing the report. He also talked about and demonstrated the basic features of Anthropoids; Primates, Apes, and Monkeys, Differences between Chimpanzees, Gorilla, Orangutan, and Gibbon, their social behavior, and evolutionary psychology.

In his speech, Professor A K M Mazharul Islam also welcomed this initiative. He said that “I am glad to be there with the students of Sociology and Anthropology at Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology.”
