HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT
On behalf of all faculty members, I welcome you to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology.
The Department has had a long journey since 2004 under the faculty of Management and General Studies with new potentials regarding quality of learning and career development. It is a complete and inclusive Department that blends excellence in teaching, field research and creative practice with a commitment to foster healthy communities to treat all people with dignity and respect, and to address demanding needs of society. The Department offers 4-year BSS (Honors) and MSS (1 and 2-year) programmes. BSS (Honors) programme provides its students with necessary analytical, interpretative, and quantitative skills to meet the challenges in contemporary global society. MSS programs provide a critical understanding of society and expertise in researching social processes, and build the basis for future careers of our graduates. Teaching
and research expertise of our Department covers a diverse range of topics that are dynamic to understand and explain the state of comparative historical sociology; financial and economic sociology; urban studies; cultural studies; research on religion; family, health and demography studies; work, class, mobility and inequalities; human rights, social movements and deviance; kinship, gender and sexuality; social and organizational change; non-governmental organization; community health, social ecology, environment, participatory research and indigenous knowledge. Sociology and Anthropology, as a career, has many choices of creativity in the field of research institutes, public health and welfare organizations, private businesses, law firms, international agencies, medical centers, educational institutions, advertising firms, survey and polling organizations and of course public services. Practicing sociological knowledge with advanced skills creates research analysts, survey researchers, statisticians, urban planners, community developers, criminologists, or demographers and so on.
