BA (HONS) IN FASHION DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

The BA (Hons) in Fashion Design and Technology program is designed to give students a broad-based platform to excel in the fashion industry. Students will combine the knowledge of fashion and textile studies with intense studio experience and gain employability skills through core modules on personal and professional development and communication skills. There is strong emphasis on Art and Design in the foundation semester which is mandatory for all students. Students will learn fundamentals of art & design, patternmaking, draping and sewing techniques. They will also master Computer Aided Design (CAD) and learn how to take design from initial concept to a fully finished garment. Students will also learn how to develop their own collections and present those to the audience.

Because of the global nature of the apparel industry, clothes made in Bangladesh, from textiles sourced from local and foreign sources, are subsequently exported all over the world. This system requires designers to be informed on a wide range of issues such as global commerce, market forces, consumer information, cultural awareness, and ‘state-of-the-art’ technology. The woven garments export from Bangladesh continued to rise and the sector provides ample opportunity for designers to make professional contribution.

Knitwear is a growing industry in Bangladesh and similar to the woven apparel design, this sector provides challenging career options where the complex nature of the global Fashion and Textile industries must be realised. The program aims to educate a creative, lateral thinking professional with knowledge from the ‘state of the art’ computerised machinery to handmade items. Knitwear designers will meet the global challenge through their creative ability and sound background of commercial, industrial and operational environments in which professional practice takes place with Bangladesh becoming one of the leading world suppliers of knitwear.

The exponential growth of Bangladesh`s garment manufacturing sector now necessitates the country to become ‘vertical’ and further growth in ‘backward linkage’ in the Textile Industry is essential to compete with China and India. The impact of Textile Design is absolutely crucial to sustained growth and future expansion of the garment industry. The need for trained Textile designers, with wide creative, technical, and marketing expertise is urgently required in both large scale production and for the indigenous Handloom sector, as this handcrafted sector has wide potential for export to both the local and export markets.

The local markets of Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan have great scope for home consumption and export of Bangladeshi designed garments and handcrafted items. The multidisciplinary nature of textiles provides an opportunity for students to develop strong critical and analytical abilities and become individually creative. The future generations of innovative, creative, and highly individual design statements will work as a platform for producing designers with a ‘Bangladesh Style’, becoming ‘Fashion Leaders’, not merely copyists and ‘followers’ of other designs.
