In a resounding display of intellect, articulation, and teamwork, the Department of Law of Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology (SMUCT) has emerged as the Champion of the prestigious Monalisa Presents PUSAB–SMUCT Debate Competition 2025, held at the permanent campus of SMUCT.
Organized in collaboration with the Private University Students’ Alliance of Bangladesh (PUSAB) and proudly presented by Monalisa Sanitary Napkin, a brand of Bashundhara Group, the competition brought together twelve departments of SMUCT in a celebration of logic, leadership, and youth empowerment. The four-day competition started on 22nd June 2025 and culminated in a thrilling final round between the Department of Law and the Department of Government and Politics on 25th June 2025.
After a fierce intellectual battle, the team of Department of Law clinched the title, earning accolades from judges, faculty, and peers alike. Their victory not only reflects their command over legal reasoning and public speaking but also underscores the department’s commitment to nurturing future leaders grounded in justice and critical thought.
The winning team comprised five outstanding debaters from Department of Law, Md. Shariful Islam (also awarded ‘Best Speaker’ of the tournament), Amrita Mukherjee, Mahia Sarkar Turna, Tazkeya Tabassum and Nahifa Sultana Nowshin. As recognition of their stellar performance, the champion team was awarded BDT 30,000, while best speaker received a brand-new laptop as a special prize.
Their preparation and performance were guided by their dedicated mentor, Adv. Abdan Shakura, Lecturer of Department of Law, whose strategic insight and unwavering support played a pivotal role in the team’s success.
The triumph was made possible through the collective encouragement and guidance of the Head of the Department of Law, Muhammad Nural Hoque, Senior District & Sessions Judge (Retd.), whose presence and leadership inspired the participants throughout the competition. Special recognition is also due to Adv. Kazi Nafiul Mazid, Advisor of Department of Law and Md. Riad Hasan, Co-ordinator of the Department of Law, for their support and encouragement, and to all faculty members of the department, whose mentorship and motivation created an environment conducive to excellence.
The competition was further enriched by the active involvement of the SMUCT Moot Court Society, which played a central role in nurturing the foundations of the debaters of Department of Law. Their commitment to fostering a culture of debate and advocacy within the department continues to bear fruit, as evidenced by this landmark achievement.
In a statement, representatives from Basundhara Group and PUSAB expressed their pride in supporting such student-centred initiatives that aim to build a generation of confident, articulate, and socially conscious leaders. The Department of Law’s victory at this debate competition is more than a trophy.
