Founder Chairman Bir Muktijoddha Md Imamul Kabir Shanto had a big question in his mind “Why do people become poor?  With this idea in his mind, he established the first Design Base University both in this subcontinent and the country called Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology. The Dance Department started here under the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts, which was also the pioneer in Bangladesh. The department was inaugurated by Mrs. Alma Shankar G from India and Laila Hasan, a distinguished dancer and director who won the Ekushey Medal of Bangladesh.  

Presently the department is making a significant contribution in the cultural arena. By creating well-educated and self-reliant artists, the dance style of this country has been enriched in many ways. The department is run by well-educated and skilled teachers and the education quality is world standard. As a result, students from this university are getting opportunities to do further higher studies from well reputed abroad universities and come back with good results. Doctors are also using dance as a therapy and doing bachelors and master’s degrees in dance from this department. Although there are dance departments in other universities of Bangladesh, only the Dance Department of Shanto Mariam University imparts training on Kathakali classical dance. In the meantime, the reputation of this department has spread in the country and abroad. 

Dancing scientifically and structurally is a very high quality exercise that can be mastered through perseverance. The benefits of dance are multifaceted – such as keeping the body and mind well and increasing immunity. We all know that there is no need to meditate or go to the gym separately while dancing. Dance is also philosophy. If you study in this department, you will find job opportunities in various media including BCS education, television, various institutions under the Ministry of Arts and Culture. Simultaneously, you will also get special opportunities to work abroad.
